Can I start numbering from a value other than 1?
Yes. Change the start number to any integer and the first numbered line begins there, counting up by one for each following line.
What does skip empty lines do?
Blank lines are left untouched and do not consume a number, so a 1 and a 2 stay next to each other even when separated by a gap.
Which separators can I use?
A dot, a closing parenthesis, a colon or a tab — the number and the separator are prefixed to each line.
