Frequently asked questions

How are the colors chosen?

The image is drawn to a small canvas and every sampled pixel is rounded to the nearest 16 on each channel. Pixels are grouped into buckets and the eight most common groups win.

Why does the palette change with a different image?

The palette reflects the pixels actually present. Photos with lots of sky and foliage return blues and greens, while flat logos return their brand colors.

Is my image uploaded?

No. Sampling happens on a canvas in your browser, so the file is never sent anywhere. It works offline once the page has loaded.
